Highlights

Record Level: Entity by year by collection
Record Count: approx. 9,000 institutions
Years Covered: 2006-Present
Population Coverage: K-12 education buildings in the state of Michigan

The K-12 building dataset holds information on the various educational entities in the state, including 9,200+ entities, 1,000+ school districts, and 57 ISDs in the state of Michigan. Data from the 2006 academic year forward are available. Future year's school year data will be added near the end of the following summer. Data are retrieved in three different collections per year: Fall, Spring, and End of Year (EOY).

The data cover administrative facilities (non-instructional) as well as instructional facilities. There is one record per collection per building in the K-12 Educational Entity Information file. Entities are classified into one of six entity categories (State, Intermediate School District, Local Education Agency, Public School Academy, Nonpublic and Other). Other Non-School Recipients, an entity that is neither a school nor a Unique Education Provider, but receives money through the Michigan Electronic Grants Systems or Cash Management System compose the Other entity category. These commonly include early childhood programs. Facilities are also classified into one of five entity groups (District, School, Non-Instructional Ancillary Facility, Unique Education Provider, and Non-School Recipient). Over 75% of the data represent school buildings. Around 17% of the data represent nonpublic institutions.

Available data come from the Educational Entity Master (EEM) and National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This includes location data (longitude, latitude, address, county), entity type, and education programs provided by the entity (virtual education, adult education, grade levels taught, early middle college, etc.).

Each entity will have it's own primary record, but will also be seen in records that it relates to. For example: A district will have it's own record, but you'll also see the district name and code on the school records that reside within that district. At the district level, beginning with the EOY 2016 collection, a flag indicates if the district is actively involved in the education of students.

In the academic year 2021, the categorization of early middle colleges was changed to identify EMCs that are operating as consortia (S2E2 Consortia). Going forward, the number of EMC Programs will decrease, as Consortia were incorrectly identified as Programs prior to this change. In this year, a new entity status was also added. "Open Active" indicates schools that are open, have revenue but have no students; a situation that arises when a district goes through financial restructuring, for example.
