Population Coverage: Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) in the United States
The Postsecondary Entity researcher file contains information about higher education institutions such as physical address, level (two-year or four-year), and control (publicly or privately owned). This includes both Michigan IHEs and out-of-state institutions. Michigan institutions comprise around 3% of the data. Data from the EOY 2008 collection forward are available. Data are collected annually, and are regenerated in entirety annually, merging all previously reported data with the most current reporting year’s data.
Some fields (HIGHER_ED_CODE, OPEN_DATE and physical address) are only provided for Michigan institutions. Data available for out of state institutions include state, IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) code, level, and control. For the 2018-2019 school year, 44% of observations represent four-year institutions.
Data for Michigan entities are sourced from the Educational Entity Master (EEM). Data for out-of-state entities are sourced from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
